Quality Tutoring

SOS tutors are recruited from top-100 universities and colleges across the United States, including Harvard University, MIT, University of Chicago, and University of California–Berkeley. All tutors have received an ACT score of 27 or higher, an SAT score of TKTK or higher, and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

We use what we call “near-age tutors” which means most of the tutors are close in age to be able to
establish a good relationship that facilitates mentorship and instruction. Tutors can model success and motivate students in learning at a higher level. All the whiteboard pages and recordings of the video interactions are kept on file for review. Our tutors have all been through a rigorous selection process, including a background check.

We have a zero-tolerance policy for any kind of inappropriate behavior by our tutors. Tutors are required to immediately end a session and report any inappropriate behavior by a student as well. All tutors are evaluated by the student or teacher after each session on a five-star rating system. Tutors are required to reach four stars above or go through immediate remediation or removal from the program.

All tutors use the SOS teaching model dubbed EXCEL, an acronym that stands for engage, explore, communicate, empower, and launch. We know from all the brain research that connecting relationally prepares a student’s brain for learning. EXCEL facilitates this relationship.
